Our COVID Encounter

Aromatherapy Support Meant A Lot…

In January 2022, my younger son caught COVID. As there's a home recovery scheme here in Singapore, we scrambled for our oils, but we were short of stock (tsk tsk!)… Anyway, I thought I would describe my lessons learned from this experience!

Before we get started, I need to add here that our family had all 3 vaccines about a month before, so we are freshly renewed with the necessary antibodies (lol)!

Observations of omicron behavior

Everyone had a change of working arrangements in January, and my son's girlfriend caught COVID at the office. At first she just had a cough while she was visiting with us. She assured me that she was negative; however, on Thursday (4 days after her visit) she turned positive. Everyone was a little panicked and we simply rushed into isolation without being prepared. She caught it from her office colleague after returning to work, even though they still work partly from home due to the infection risk!

My son started having a sore throat on that Thursday. I said to him, "Let's assume it’s COVID" (likely Omicron by it’s symptoms), even though he had tested negative, especially as his girlfriend had thought it was a regular cough before it turned positive on her. On Friday he started a fever, with a cough and sore throat. Saturday, he was still sick but negative. On Sunday, he started feeling better, and still negative. At this point we started doubting ourselves and thought perhaps it’s just a regular flu! He got well on Monday and took another test to exit isolation, but this time the test result was positive! He couldn’t believe it and took another ART test from another brand. It was still positive, so he had to start isolation all over again!

Precautions

Meanwhile, on Thursday, I had put myself on my Antivirus oils formula, and stayed in my own isolated area of the apartment. I should also add that we did the following to protect both of us:

  • My son sprayed his room with Dettol air disinfectant every time he left his room to come to the common area.

  • We double-masked, and kept our mask on at home whenever we left our rooms.

  • We washed our hands the first moment we left our rooms.

  • We stayed separated as much as possible in our own rooms. We didn’t use the common space in the dining area except to cook or prepare food. We stay in a 4 room flat, so space is an issue!

  • Of course we used separate toilets and bathrooms.

  • I ordered lengyang and TCM herbs, and had it delivered to our door, gan mao san for us; even though I didn’t have anything, I took it for insurance.

Over the weekend, I stayed well, with no symptoms. I used my oils, with a gargle and nose rinse, and took care of all the meals leaving them at my son's door (he was good, and always waited until I was gone from the corridor before he opened his door). Most of the day, I left a fan blowing in the corridor space that leads to our rooms.

On Tuesday I started my son on antivirus oils too (he ran out of options so he surrendered to my oils, hehehe!). Then once more on Thursday and Friday.

On Friday, a week after he started symptoms, he tested negative! He was super happy, and we were all excited to finally exit our isolation on Sunday! During that week when my son was sick and positive, his girlfriend was coughing throughout. I had convinced her to try the oils, and so she did one dose on Tuesday. She tested negative on Thursday and had finally stopped coughing.

Some Recommendations…

I stayed well the whole time and I learned a few things along the way. Here are my own recommendations (with a disclaimer that I can only speak for my own brand, because I know where my oils are sourced from):

  1. Put an aromatherapy diffuser in your common area such as the dining or living room: 5 drops for a day will do. If you have pets or children under five years old, reduce to 3 drops and keep the fan going in the area. Useful oils like Ravintsara (baby safe), Pine, Niaouli, Eucalyptus radiata, Thyme thuyanol (expensive but baby safe) are all good airborne disinfectants.

  2. Peppermint plus Ravintsara as a mouth wash for sore throat is soothing—1 drop of each in a glass of water.

  3. Because it contains all the antivirus elements, our Veronica Aromatherapy Calm Inflammation Blend applied on your neck lymph nodes takes care of the cough and phlegm. Apply 2 or 3 drops spread evenly 3–4 times daily, or up to 6 times daily if the sore throat is really bad.

  4. Our Veronica Aromatherapy Anti-Infection Blend is good for the cough; apply to the neck and upper chest. Apply 2 or 3 drops on the neck lymph nodes and upper-chest breast bone, 3–4 times daily. Can be used as an alternative to the Calm Inflammation Blend.

  5. Our Veronica Aromatherapy Magic Joint Blend is also good for the muscle, joint and body aches. 3 or 4 drops on the affected joint 3 times daily.

  6. Our Veronica Aromatherapy Anti-Allergy Synergy oil is good for a drippy nose; use as an inhalation to dry the nasal passages. Place a drop in your palm, then rub and inhale, or apply to the sides of your nostrils. Alternatively, place a drop on a tissue and inhale as needed.
